Ku Li's Candidacy

::This is the 2nd occasion, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah or popularly called Ku Li, will be offering himself for the post of UMNO president. The first was in 1987 when he lost to incumbent Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir (now Tun) narrowly by 42 votes. This eventually lead to UMNO being declared illlegal and the formation of UMNO Baru by Mahathir and Semangat 46 by Ku Li. The rest is history, UMNO Baru eventually became UMNO again and Semangat 46 went its way and was dissolved in 1996.
Ku Li has offered himself this time for the following reasons ::
1. The UMNO president's post is vacant, UMNO presently has only an acting president
2. No one appears to be interested as "no one has offered to contest the post"
3. He wants to keep "democracy" alive in UMNO
4. His friends and supporters have urged him to offer himself
5. He is prepared to serve and to struggle for UMNO
6. He is qualified to do so. (see CV below)
The above reasons are not in any order of importance.

Tengku Razaleigh, first became Umno vice president in 1975 at the age of 29 and was re-elected in 1978 and 1981. He mounted a challenge against Dr Mahathir for the presidency in the 1987 party polls but was narrowly defeated by the then prime minister who obtained a majority of only 42 votes. Tengku Razaleigh also lost twice in his bid for the Umno Deputy President's post to Tan Sri Musa Hitam, the then deputy prime minister, in 1981 and 1984. Ku Li is a gradduate of Queen's University and has a Bachelor of Science in Economics and also studied law at Lincoln's Inn. He first became Gua Musang MP in 1974 and has been its MP since. He served as finance minister for 8 years from 1976.

When announcing his offer to be candidate, he had this to say to UMNO members present :: "It is up to all of you. I can't do more than this because I have nothing, I'm just a lone ranger. You are my strength in order to be able to advance for the sake of the Malays and myself."

Over the next many days and weeks, in the runup to the UMNO elections, one can expect the mainstream print and electronic media to echo Ku Li's detractors in decrying if not outright ridiculing Ku Li's candidacy. Many of the UMNO leaders are already saying that Ku Li is not serious about his offer, as if they know him better than himself; some says that he is 'more suitable' for one of the vice president's posts; others predict a difficult time for him and many wonder if he would ever achieved that magical figure of 58 divisional nominations.

Expect more newspaper reports like these ::

Lets wait and see whether all will be fair in this endeavour of Ku Li to try for the president's post once again or will there be forces out to prevent a fair fight. Whatever it is, UMNO members must be given an even field to make a decision as to whom they would like to be their leader to further their struggle. As for the nation, will it really make any difference whether Ku Li or Pak Lah wins at the end of the day?

They are all smiles now, will things be the same at the end of the day, Come September. Will UMNO be torned asunder once again? Will we see UMNO Baru II? Whatever will be, will be, the future's not ours to see, QUE, SERA, SERA
