Prince keeps a tradition alive, among 18 foreign cadets this year
DEHRA DUN, DECEMBER 10 Probabaly for the first time ever, the Indian Army will have a Malaysian prince in its ranks. At least for the next two years.
Earning his spurs at the Indian Military Academy’s 72nd passing-out parade here today was Lt Ismail Ibrahim of Johor province, son of Crown Prince Anwar Ibrahim and grandson of Sultan Iskandar.
‘‘We have always held the traditions of the Indian Army in high esteem and wanted the prince to study at the Academy,’’ Crown Prince Ibrahim told The Indian Express, after his son was commissioned into 61st Cavalry.
‘‘However, this is just the beginning, and he has many more things to learn,’’ says Crown Prince Ibrahim, before tracing the family’s special relationship with the Indian Army back to World War II.
‘‘During the war, three officers from the Johor Army were sent to the IMA to receive military training, even as the provinces were battling the Japanese. One of them later became the chief of the Malaysian Army, while the other, Toong Hussain On, became the Prime Minister of Malaysia,’’ says Crown Prince Ibrahim. Lt Ibrahim plans to stay in the Indian Army for the next two years.
‘‘The Academy was a very good experience in military training and I shall be continuing with what I have learnt here,’’ he says.
The young prince was one of the 18 foreign cadets who passed from the Academy today, including those from Bhutan, Maldives, Mauritius and Nepal. Of course, Crown Prince Anwar Ibrahim was not the only father with a proud smile lighting up his face as over 440 cadets made the grade.
The New Kerala also had a report entitled :: Malaysian royal graduates from IMA. The Johore Crown Prince was referred to as Anwar Ibrahim, the crown price of Johor and the late former PM was Tun Hussain Onn. It looks like the Indian press has problems with people and things Malaysian. It looks like those in Wisma Putra has work to do. Now how many of us knew that Tun Hussein Onn, the Father of Unity, left UMNO twice, the first was in 1951 to join his father in forming the Independence of Malaya Party (IMP) and the second when UMNO Baru was formed.
