CNY with A Big Bang?

Since those far off younger days, for me at least, CNY has always been associated with the sounds of firecrackers and the fireworks. Without these two ingredients, the CNY atmosphere appears incomplete. Don't get me wrong, i am not for the near endless firing of strings upon strings of firecrackers by challenging associations like in the old days. i considered the din created as harmful to the ears and the acrid smoke accompanying a danger to health. But wouldn't some controlled firing of crackers and firework displays make CNY more festive? i am sure many would join me in lamenting the lack of 'CNY mood' when these two are missing. Sim Kwang Yang was one of those wanting to celebrate the CNY with a vengeance. See CNY dampers too.

To my pleasant surprise, here is another person who seems to share our laments regarding not having a Big Bang CNY, one named YAT FONCION.

Here are excerpts from his letter to the STAR ::
I witnessed a display of fireworks from my balcony in the early hours of Feb 17.
My children rushed from their room, while my wife who was awakened by the noise joined me to watch the spectacular display of fireworks set off in a field right in front of my apartment.
The occasion was the ninth day of the new lunar year....

The firing of firecrackers is a violation of the law only if the authorities say so. However, this law can be removed if the authorities feel so.
That being the case, coupled with the bragging by our leaders of promoting Asian values and culture, I am wondering why must we suppress the Asian culture?...

Why must our laws make our people feel guilty about celebrating their festivals in the manner they prefer?

This CNY has seen more sounds [some will call it auditory irritation] of crackers fired and more display of fireworks despite the warnings by our deputy MINIster of Internal Security and the polis. So even in my housing estate, there were many like Foncion's friend who were willing to risk being caught and brought to court and fined just to have a merrier atmosphere. As a result of this merriment, the polis had to announced and warned of more severe actions just a couple of days before the 9th day of the CNY. On that night the presence of the polis was palpably felt in our taman. A polis car in the shaped of a Kancil with 2 polis in it came along and parked itself right outside my neighbour's house. Both of them got out of the car and leaned against to observe proceedings. Of course my neighbour had to hurriedly pack up his firecrackers and fireworks and make them scarce. He had probably a good cache as his children were back from overseas for the CNY season. Thinking that they had don't thir job, the polis left and out came the cache of crackers and fireworks but then the rain came to dampen spirits further. It was almost 3am before the rain went away eventually and that was when the sound of cracker and firework music started. Probably by then the polis had retired. Fearing another 'lawless' night on Chap Goh Mei, a couple of days prior the ppublic was again warned about the severe penalities :: they face a fine of up to RM10,000 or jail or both if found guilty. So the Chap Goh Mei went by rather subdued and quietly.

Can we expect the next CNY to be a little different?
