The Chitterlings Smuggler

Ever since the Nipah Virus outbreak some 6 years ago, that island nation downsouth has banned imports of meat products from Malaysia. This ban has resulted in the smuggling of meat into Singapore. In May 2001, a Malaysian truck driver, one Superamaniam, was jailed a year for smuggling more than 5,000 kg of chitterlings and other meat into Singapore. In 2003, a technician, one Lim Thiam Hock, was sentenced to six months’ jail and fined $10,000 for importing the meat from Malaysia without a licence, among his booty was the meat of monkey, civet cats, bats and snakes were found in a cold room with pork, chitterlings, mutton and frog legs.

Joining the ranks of these chitterlings smugglers recently is a Singaporean man, one Tan Choong Wah, 46, who loaded his sampan with 232 kilograms of, why else, but chitterlings and tried to smuggle them into Singapore. He was apprehended by the coast guard and now has to spend 3 months in jail. Now who managed to cook and eat his confiscated chitterlings?

Now while we are on the subject of meat smugglers, remember those kiasu chaps downsouth couldn't get enough of what has been described as "a cult burger" made by our very own famous local food processor :: Ramly of Burger fame. Smugglers are prepared to risk spending up to two years in Singapore jails to illegally bring in Ramly Burgers into Singapore. Singapore Ramly Burger fans say therse burgers have a better texture and a spicier taste than Western-style patties. And when cooked in Worcestershire sauce and spices and served wrapped in omelettes, they taste , well heavenly.

Tan Sri Dr Noordin Sopiee Passes On

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ISIS [Institute of Strategic and International Studies] Tan Sri Dr Noordin Sopiee passed away today after a fight with thyroid cancer.

Tan Sri Dr Noordin Sopiee is synonymous with ISIS, he was appointed its Director General in 1984 and was made chairman and chief executive officer in 1997, a long association lasting more than 20 years.

He will be remembered for organising the Asia-Pacific Roundtable, the 1st of which was held in 1987. The roundtable is a forum for informal exchanges of views among scholars and practitioners on issues of peace and security which are critical issues of concern in the region.

BERNAMA has this to say about Mr ISIS ::

Dr Noordin will be best remembered by Malaysians for having slammed former United States Vice President Al Gore as a discourteous person after the latter expressed support for the reformation struggle led by sacked Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at a dinner in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) conference in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

He had even taken out a full-page advertisement in The New Straits Times newspaper to express his disgust at the insult hurled at the country and then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

To many others, Tan Sri Noordin will be remembered for many other events and happenings and doings. May he rest in peace.

To Get at Them....Use the SS Technique

To get at those things they suspected you may have hidden in odd passages, the polis are said to observe "warisan" and "tradition" and routinely make you, if you happened to be detained by them for whatever alleged offences, do the instant 3-in-1 dislodgement exercise :: the naked ear-squat technique.

As for the Customs, they have a diffirent custom for their detained customers, they make them do the squat and shit technique (or defaecation as they prefer to call it, what a word) and shit the hidden stuff out under the cover of a sarong. Sounds so wayang kulitish. The Custom officers presumably then turn shit stirrers to look among the shit for the hidden stuff or stool inspectors to see the foreign objects emerging. In order to get them to do the shit those poor souls are stuffed full of liquid paraffin or other laxatives. Getting them to do the shit would probably result in the expulsion of stuff hidden in the large guts, the Customs Dept Preventive Division Director claimed that 500gms of heroin worth more than RM50,000 came out that way from one smuggler! But will doing the squat and shit technique cause hidden things to fall from the power vagina? What does the Customs customarily do in such instances? We are waiting for more emerging Customs technique.

Noh Knows or Noh Know or NO NO

That deputy minister who told tourists who don't like the way our polis treats them to stay away; now says that he did not know the nationality of the squatgate victim earlier on. Who is going to believe him? As far as most of us are concerned it is either "Noh Knows" or "Noh Know" and certainly not "NO NO".

N.O. or Noh Omar is Deputy Minister of Internal Security and is in charge of the PDRM and he has been reported as saying himself that he has been given a full report by the polis prior to Opposition leader Lim's tabling of the motion to discuss squatgate in Parliament. Now he is telling the media that he only learnt of the woman’s nationality from the newspapers.

Several women's organisations and opposition parties, comprising Dewan Muslimat Pas Pusat (DMPP), Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) women's movement, DAP, Pertubuhan Jamaah Islah Malaysia (JIM), Women's Development Collective (WDC), All Women Action Council (AWAM) and women's wing of Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, want the nude ear squat procedure practised by the police on women detainees to be halted because it outrages their dignity.

They are in disbelief that N.O. knows not and PAS Dewan Muslimat information chief Dr Siti Mariah Mahmood has this to say of it ::

"If he and the police didn’t know, how could have they identified and called the woman to the independent inquiry?"
"They knew who she was all along."

As the humiliating ear-squats are applied gender blind by the polis, why are the men's organisations not getting together to protest too? Is it okay for male detainees to be treated in such a humiliating manner? Hopefully it is not going to take another video-clip, this time one of a gentleman ear-squatter, to make us demand for these ear-squats to be abolished for all. Now why didn't our ladies include their gentlemen ounterparts in their demands that the ear-squats be halted for men too.

Rapper/Senators Challenged

Some senators and BN leaders have ben trying hard to get into the limelight and have jumped onto the bandwagon to try and condemn YB Teresa and Opposition leader Lim over the video-clip scandal. These rapper/senators and others appear to have little grey matter within their craniums and loose cannons for mouths have been condemnig the DAP duo for tarnishing the image of the country and that of the embattled polis force which has amongst its midst, members who are out to make life difficult for some, if not all, who are unfortunate to be suspected to have committed crimes.

Why don't these rapper/senators get a life and make sure that they are up-to-date with regards to what is happening around them and the true state of affairs of matters before they let loose their cannons. Even the DPM has joined in to say that the video-clip scandal should be seen in its true perspective, BERNAMA reported him as saying ::

"This is not a racial issue as from the start, we had expressed our concern over the issue. Although the detainee is a Malaysian citizen, the government still feels that whatever that can be regarded as insulting a detainee, is not appropriate, unless it is guided by laws and regulations."

Both Opposition leader Lim and YB Teresa are rather fedup with those uncalled allegations and taunts and threats coming from the rapper/senators and Lim has challenged them. Calling these rapper/senators as "a shame and disgrace to Parliament and the nation", as apart from making baseless allegations, they have not said a word about the indignity, humiliation and human rights violations suffered by the Malay woman victim or the urgent need for radical police reform to end the pattern of abuse and human rights violations of detainees in polis custody. Lim has challenged the senators to give approval for YB Teresa and him to appear next week before the Senate to give point-by-point reply to the irresponsible and baseless charges by several senators over the police squatgate scandal. Wil those loose cannons accept the challenge, dare they face the truth?

Are These Senators (& Others) Serious about SquatGate???

Are these people serious? They are rapping YB Teresa Kok and Opposition leader Lim for their role in the expose of the video-clip showing the ketuk ketampi lady. Where were they when the video-clip was first brought to light? Maybe it was because they like many others thought the victim in question was a Chinese national and couldn't care more; they couldn't see her, the victim, as a human in distress. A human being subjected to a dehumanising punishment. A human being having her rights violated by the very people who are expected to provide her protection. These rappers who include senators and our gomen leaders are just unbelieveable. Fortunately people like the MINIster in-charge of Parliament, the Home Affairs MINIster and the Women, Family and Community Development Minister are not like them. Are these rapper/people beyond shame?

BERNAMA and other media sources have pointed out who these shallow people are ::

Senator Datuk Dayang Mahani Tun Panglima Ahmad Raffae today criticised Seputeh member of Parliament (MP) Teresa Kok Suh Sim for her role in the nude ear-squat issue. She said Kok had played up the issue and seemed to have questioned the police's credibility. As a result, the police had been censured prematurely even though ear-squatting in the nude was a normal procedure especially in cases involving drug abuse, she told reporters at the Parliament lobby.
Senator Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain challenged Kok to come forward to defend the woman in the video if she really wanted to be a protector."Now she (Kok) is very quiet. She should help the woman. If the identity of the woman was made known at the start, perhaps the case would have developed differently," she said during the debate on Budget 2006 in the Dewan Negara.
Senator Kassim Ismail accused Kok of having ulterior motive in exposing the incident which he said could harm the good relations between Malaysia and China.
Senator Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee :: "Teresa patut didakwa kerana menjaja cerita lucah di Parlimen sehingga memalukan wanita itu, polis kita sebenarnya bagus, apa yang dilakukan ke atas tahanan terbabit adalah prosedur biasa. "Disebabkan oleh perbuatan beliau itu, Menteri Keselamatan Dalam Negeri, Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid terpaksa ke China untuk meminta maaf sedangkan hari ini apabila membaca akhbar seluruh rakyat terkejut kerana tahanan itu adalah wanita tempatan berketurunan Melayu."
Umno Kemaman MP Ahmad Shabery Chik wants both Kok and Lim to be referred to the Parliamentary Privileges Committee.
Batu Pahat MP, Dr Junaidy Abd Wahab, said :: Tindakan Lim dan Teresa menyebabkan Parlimen membahaskan isu itu tanpa fakta yang tepat/ Lim and Teresa's action caused Parliament to debate the issue with any specific factor.

Are these people trying to get into the limelight now that the victim has been identified and just don't know of a better way to? Are they not able to see and reliase for themselves what the video-clip incident is all about? Could i just point it out to them again, the whole issue is about the horrible treatment meted out to an unfortunate fellow human who happened to be detained by some of the members of our polis. Is that plain enough. And as for the Home Affairs MINIster having to go to China and apologise needlessly please check out with the PM and his cabinet. i remember the Home MINIster saying he tendered no apology when in China and that he was ordered to go on his China trip by the PM and the cabinet and not because of Teresa and Lim. This was even before the video-clip was revealed. His trip was delayed because his China counterpart had something on. Maybe some of these rapper/people might be internet savvy, do check out what Teresa has to say for herself here. If you can't or won't, then shame on you.

What did the OBGYN say about Ear-Squats???

Yesterday an OBGYN specialist from Hospital Kuala Lumpur, one Dr Zainab testified before the Commission to provide a gynaecological perspective on the effectiveness of ear-squats to dislodge foreign objects from the vagina or rectum of a detainee.

Dr Zainab was brought in to provide another professional perspective on the effectiveness of ear-squats. After all, on Day 2, there were a number of polis and prison personnels who provided anecdoctal tales regarding how effective ear-squats were, even to the extent of dislodging a tiny pill from its hiding place.

Different takes appeared to be have been taken by the media, and we are left wondering what was really said by Dr Zainab during her testimony.

Malaysiakini reported ::

Zainab said squatting was an effective way to expel objects hidden in a detainee’s private parts while ear squats could have the contrary results.

The STAR appeared to think that Dr Zainab affirmed that ear-squats were effective and holding on to the ears was for balancing::

Earlier, Dr Zainab Shamsuddin affirmed that squats were effective in expelling foreign objects from the vagina and rectum because the action would cause pelvic muscles to relax.

"It’s only a matter of time before the object is expelled," said the Kuala Lumpur Hospital consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist.

Dr Zainab said it was possible to insert foreign objects in the vagina and rectum "because they are quite large compared with the urethra."

"Voluntary muscles can be trained to retain a foreign object depending on one’s muscle tone," she said. "Any cylindrical object can be inserted."

On the need to hold the ears, she said it helped a person maintain balance while doing the squats.

"Ear-squats can be effective in expelling objects hidden in the private parts of detainees. However, to improve the recovery rate, it would be better to make the suspect squat and exert some pressure to his/her abdomen by straining or giving a good cough.

"The rectal and vaginal muscles tend to go into a relaxed state when a woman squats, as it will shift to a 90 degree position as opposed to a 45 degree position when the woman is standing.

"In theory, when a person doing ear-squats, squats and than stands - the standing action will possibly nullify the effect of squatting

"A person's ability to retain objects in their private parts while doing ear-squats differs depending on the size and shape of the object inserted, the ability and strength of pelvic muscles to retain the object and the depth of insertion."

And what's my personal take on the effectiveness of ear-squats, if you have great, well-toned and well-exercised musculature downunder, you will be able to retain any stuff there, provided of course you are not thinking of retaining an elephant there. So Datuk Seri DIGP just don't feel too bad that you missed that toothbrush in the rectum which eventually became a weapon and that is no cause for you to subject all those poor souls of polis detainees to those dehumanising ear-squats. And also forget that bulls__t about having to strip them completely naked to check for cut and bruises, remember the "black eye", did any of you see it? And that was visible even without having to strip off the glasses!

Zul's Denial

On Day 3 of the Commission's sitting, the one who has been thought by many to be the recorder of the video-clip, after Day 2, told the Commission today that he is not the culprit and hat his colleague, Lans Corporal Mat Suhaimi Nordin, is a liar.

Excerpts from the BERNAMA report ::

Constable Mohd Zul Fatah Saari Wednesday denied filming the video clip of a woman doing ear squats naked in a police locker room at the Petaling Jaya police station on June 29.

Infact, Zul Fatah described Lans Corporal Mat Suhaimi Nordin who made the allegation in his testimony at the Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating the incident that had drawn nationwide criticism, as a liar.

Yesterday, Suhaimi told the inquiry that Zul Fatah had shown to him the video clip on his handphone and told him that the woman in the video was arrested for drug possession by the narcotics team.

Zul Fatah, who also denied Suhaimi's allegation that he left the Taman Seri Manja police station in Petaling Jaya at 3 am and returned at 7.30 am, told the inquiry that he only left the station for about 45 minutes to have his meal at a nearby restaurant.

Zul Fatah also said that he did not know why Suhaimi had lied and there were no problems between them......

When he was shown the video clip, Zul Fatah bowed slightly, wiping tears from his face. This prompted Dzaiddin to say: "Don't cry," to which Zul Fatah replied, "No, My eyes are hurt."

The SUN online reported Zul Fatah making the following denials ::

Going to Petaling Jaya police station.
Took the video at the woman lock-up in the Petaling Jaya police headquarters.
Showing Suhaimi the video clip.
Telling Suhaimi of the video clip.
Know Ong Yoong Keong, a technician with LKB telecommunication who had on Tuesday told the inquiry that a policeman instructed him to download a video clip from a cell phone memory card and transfer it to his laptop.

The Commission Findings After Day 2

So what do we know after 2 days of testimonies by withnesses called by the Commission? Plenty we already suspected or knew but there is still plenty we need nto know.

1. The video-clip is not a fake. As suspected it was recorded by an insider and the most likely candidate is probably L/Cpl Suhaimi Nordin's colleague, Constable Zulfatah. The two were on duty at Taman Sri Manja Police Beat Base on June 29, 2005

2. Early morning, on 29th June 2005, the lady squatter (the one in the said video-clip) was arrested with 5 others on drug possession charge and brought to the PJ district Polis HQ. Before being admitted to the PJ district Polis HQ lock-up she was subjected to the "traditional" body search which included doing 10 naked squats after she had produeced a urine specimen under the watchful eyes of a polislady. She said that on the day in question no drug was found on her but she has been charged with drug possession and is presently on bail. Because of the gag order, all we know about her identify is that she is a 22 year old Malay Malaysian lady and definitely not a Chinese national.

3. The lady polis officer who received the lady squatter on that June morning has been identified as Lance Corporal Wan Zawati@Zalina Wan Ibrahim and she has been with the PJ polis station since she fir4st joined on 1st Jan 1999. Since the day of joining she has been made aware that prior to admitting any arrested lady to the lock-up the "traditional" body search and naked squats have to be carried out. Failure to do so and upon prohbited things being found in the lock-up, polis found to have caused the foul-up would be subjected to disciplinary action. The "traditional" procedure was also to check for injuries on the one to be locked-up.

Cat's Out of d'Bag::She's Local

The naked lady squatter at the centre of the sensational video-clip contrversy is a local Malay lady. But does it really matters of what ethnic group or nationality she is? We should all be colour-blind whenever there are incidents of abusive acts and acts against human rights. When first hightlighted the victim was thought to be a Chinese and probably a Chinese national, the Chinese vernacular press took up the issue. The opposition and the NGOs also took up the issue but not because they thought she was a Chinese or a Chinese national but because there has been high-handed action by the polis and the act was degrading, dehumanising and and an abuse of her human rights among other things.

Of course there were others, no need to mention who they are, who try to give a racial slant to things. And some of us may wonder why that guy who did some keris brandishing, has not been doing it this time around. Even his puteri friends are ever so quiet over this incident where a fellow lady has had her rights violated. These people can't see things without putting on their coloured glasses.

There were those in China who thought that she is a Chinese national as a result of much speculation, this resulted in massive widespread indignation in China. China is not known to be a great defender of human rights, so the present revelations might just see the disappearance of this indignation. But then again China might keep the pressure up as there are four other nationals of hers who have alleged abuses by our polis. On the other hand there were others who viewed the episode as not their problem and not worthy of their concern and the present revelation might just shame them with regards to their lack of concern and indifference.

Message from China

Our Home Affairs MINIster has returned from China with a message for the local enforcers :: Don't be overzealous when conducting investigation on Chinese citizens who have been arrested for any suspected criminal act.

Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said that the Chinese gomen considered such overzealous acts as insulting to China. At the same time the Chinese gomen is not asking for any special treatment [certainly not the variety that is being dished out as "standard procedures" or warisan by the local polis] for its citizens

Claiming that his trip was a success in restoring onfidence among Chinese nationals that it was safe to visit Malaysia and they would be treated equally like visitors from other countries, Datuk Seri Azmi further claimed :: "So we can expect tourists from China to come back in aircraft-loads in the near future." Is he serious? Or is it wishful thinking and hoping? This has been reported in the STAR.

The Commission Told:: Ketuk Ketampi Ianya 'Warisan Polis’

"The Commission of Inquiry into the Standard Operating Procedure, Approaches or Regulations in the handling of Body Search in Connection with Arrest and Detention by the Police" finally got down to its first sitting. From the news items available, the following have come to light ::

1.Chief Inspector Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman, the officer-in-charge of the Petaling Jaya district Polis HQ told the Commision that the "ketuk ketampi" is considered a "warisan/heritage" handed down over the years and is somewhat considered a tradisi. He identifies the polislady in the clip who had ordered the detainee to do the naked squats as L/Cpl Wan Zawati Zalina Wan Ismail. Abdul Aziz believed that the sensational video-clip was recorded from the ventilation shaft. He also testified that those detained by the polis in connection with serious offences would be asked to strip and perform ear squats for "not more than 10 times". When asked if he knew the one who had made the recording, he replied that a L/Cpl Suhaimi told him that he had watched the clip shown by a Cpl Mohd Zul Fatah at the end of this June. So it apears that the video-clip is not a new one and had been in circulation and the polis was aware of its existence some 5 months before it was exposed by YB Teresa Kok. Makes one wonder what the polis did in the meanwhile.

2.Petaling Jaya OCPD Acting ACP Hazam Abdul Halim confirmed that there is no standing order from the IGP or any other relevant regulation or guideline which specifies that a detainee should perform ear-squats in the nude before being brought into a police lock-up. Acting ACP Hamzah revealed that the ear-squat procedure ordered to be performed by almost all detainees before they were sent to lock-ups was not a written rule but more of a unwritten procedure followed by the polis throughout the country. A widespread and most likely performance in the various polis lock-ups in the country. Clarifying, he said :: "It is only a standard practice... there is no directive about it in the Lock-Up Rules 1953. It is mostly performed on those picked up for drug offences, dangerous crimes and firearms offences." He also mentioned that the purpose of naked ear-squats was to get the detainees to eject any hidden items from their private parts. He said that these squats have produced results in he past but did not specify as to how effective they really were. Such squats were ordered verbally by the superior polis oficer and lower ranking polis officers would face discipinary actions if they failed to carry out these verbal orders. He said only women personnel were allowed to perform body searches on women detainees and this is carried out in a separate room from the lock-ups for male detainees. He added that no body contact is allowed and that the detainees were to be treated with ‘respect and dignity'. Now we must be wondeing how all these are going to be possible.

As to when he was informed about the video-clip, he said it was on the 24th of November. The officer who informed him of this was the officer-in-charge of the Petaling Jaya district Polis HQ. According to the acting ACP, the one who made the recording must be an insider.

3.The PJ district polis headquarter's photographer L/CPL Zainol Nor Rashid Mat Arip was regarding the photographs he had taken of the lock-up and the police headquarters. The Commission later visited the said PJ polis HQ in the afternoon.

4.Malaysiakini reported that the lady/detainee filmed doing the naked ear-squats in he video-clip would be testifying tomorrow. But we may not get to know her identity as a gag order has been proposed to protect her identity. So is she a Chinese national or Malaysian? We may never know. The Commission, which is headed by former chief justice Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin Abdullah with the other members being former MCA deputy president Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek, former Bar Council president Kuthubul Zaman Bukhari, Wanita Umno legal bureau chief Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim and Datuk Hamzah Mohamed Rus, who will serve as the Commission secretary, will sit again tomorrow to hear from other withnesses. A total of 21 withnesses are expected to testify before the Commission.

Are We Serious???

Many events and reports over the recent past have made me wonder whether we are serious about things. Surely al of us can recall the cae of the sensational video-clip of those naked squats. Till today we are wondering whether she is a Chinese national. Her nationality is something no one is telling and it has been passed about from the DIGP to the deputy MINIster of IS to the Home MINIster and finally to the commission set up to probe the ear squat video incident. The proper name for the commission is quite a mouthful :: "Commission of Inquiry into the Standard Operating Procedure, Approaches or Regulations in the handling of Body Search in Connection with Arrest and Detention by the Police". As the lady who did the squats has been subpoenaed to testify before the commission, her identify is already known and she has been traced.

Our Home Affairs MINIster before going to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou was widely reported in the press as having been ordered by the PM to go to China to lure the Chinese tourists back to Malaysia by apologising for the mistreatments of some Chinese nationals by some of our polis and immigration officers as well as some misguided ones in Genting. But after some delay and upon reaching China the MINIster said he wasn't apologising but was in China to express anger and sadness. Whether he did apologise or not, the Chinese weren't too happy with him and asked why there was no representative from the polis in Beijing to explain the alleged mistreatment of Chinese nationals. The Sunday STAR has given his China visit a spin and even went to the extent of saying that he had given a great performance despite his injured toe and "deserves a pat on the back for passing acid test in China". Anyway why is he so sad and angry over the mistreatment, as the media has been pointing out the said lady may even be a Malaysian national! If this is true then the MINIster has cause to be sad and angry and should be apologising to Malaysians for all the unsavoury stuff the polis, who is under his good care, has been dishing out to fellow Malaysians whom the force is suppose to look after and protect.

Are our deputy MINIster of IS and his fellow BN MPs serious when they tried to turn the tables on the DAP with regards to the "naked squat scandal". They claimed that the polis had knowledge of the said incident even before it was brought into the open by the DAP, they knew as early as 22nd November. Of course the polis was working quietly undercover to uncover tthe perpetrators of the naked incident. Many would probably think they were probably busily working undercover to do some cover-up. And that Bung from Kinabatangan had to chip in to say that the DAP has an agenda to destroy the economy. The MP from Santubong claimed that the DAP had a hidden agenda and was out to get cheap publicity and personal gain. Publicity yes, why shouldn't politicos try to get some but where can there be personal gain to be gained from highlighting abuse fo human rights?

To top it al, the Tourism MINIster now claims that the recent alleged cases of polis abuse involving Chinese nationals are not the factor behind the drop in tourist arrivals from China!!! So why has our Home Affairs MINIster been sent to China in the first place??? Are we serious, indeed?

Unoffical Results::BN wins Pengkalan Pasir

According to Malaysiakini, BN is said to have won the Pengkalan Pasir bye-election by a majority of about 100 votes. PAS has not given up yet and is asking for a recount.
PAS claims that there are phantom voters, this has been denied by BN.
A voter turn-out of 82.95% has been reported, this is an increase of 5.91% more than the 2003 general election.
With this BN win, the PAS gomen of Kelantan is in a very precarious position, it having 23 seats and BN with 22 seats in the 45 seat Kelantan Dewan Negeri. Will we be seeing a Kelantan State election in the near future.

MerdekaReview.com meanwhile reported that BN has won with a majority of 129 votes. BN is said to have obtained 7419 while PAS took 7290 and the 'Frog Prince' obtained a miserly total of 414 votes and will lose his deposit.

The Balakrishnan Hunger Strike

Emergency Ordinance detainee :: Sungai Dua Tambahan MIC branch chairperson, Balakrishnan Appala Naidu who is currently under the restricted residence in Kelantan has been on hunger strike since 30th. November 2005 from 8.00am. His wife, Rukumani has joined him in the hunger strike. According to Balakrishnan's brother, the condition of Rukumani is quite critical as she cannot walk while Bala, though stable, is getting weaker and weaker.
The couple has spent the last four days in a hut beside a road in the village of Kuala Balah in Jeli, Kelantan.

Balakrishnan was originally arrested in April 2004 and placed under the EO. The Johor High Court ordered his release in Jan 2005, but he was rearrested immediately under the same charges when he walked out the Simpang Renggam detention centre. Following this arrest he was banished to Kelantan. His hunger strike is to seek justice and his release from restricted residence under the EO. He hopes that Pak Lah will look into his case. Balakrishnan is also questioning about the double standard being applied on him, he referred to the case of socalled 'Heavenly King' Tee Yam who was also detained under the EO but has been subsequently released. Hunger strike is a method of non-violent resistance in which participants fast as an act of political protest or to achieve a goal. Famous hunger strikes included the one in 1981, where Irish republican volunteers in a British jail on Irish soil undertook a fast to the death to retain their status as political prisoners. The then British PM, Thatcher, had decided to classified them as criminal. Ten of the these hunger strikers died while on this hunger strike.

One of the most famous hunger strikers was Mahatma Gandhi who engaged in two famous hunger strikes. The first protested British rule of India; the second, autocratic rule in the newly independent India. Recently those detained in Guantanamo Bay initiated two widespread hunger strikes to get concessions to be treated in a manner consistent with the Geneva Conventions.

Often one is asked how long can these hunger strikers last. It all depends on many factors. How was the condition of the hunger striker at the start of the fast. What did the hunger strike entails? Was food and water completely refused or a liquid diet was used and whether salt was taken while on hunger strike. Check out this 2004 article in Slate.com :: Hunger strikes 101. Hunger strikers can use many methods to prolong their protest and fast. Turkish hunger strikers could last up to 300 days by taking salt, unrefined sugar, and vitamins, which limit weight loss to just a few ounces per day, thus allowing them to fast for a long time.

Nicol in the Final

Nicol David has made it to the final of the "Cathay Pacific Credit Suisse Privilege World Open Hong Kong" Squash championship, beating Vanessa Atkinson :: 6/9, 9/1, 10/9, 9/3. The match not only decided who would contest the World Open final, but who would become the World Number One come January 2006 and it looks like it is going to be Nicol David of Malaysia. Incidentally i have just read that she is being called Malaysia's 'Duracell Bunny' Nicol David. Probably it is for her strength and energy to go on and on and on.

Noh's Mission Impossible

After his "Go Home Foreigners" remarks, our deputy Interanl Security MINIster has embarked on a mission impossible. He has denied marking those remarks. He has claimed that the local and foreign press have "misintepreted" his remarks. But he stand ready to apologise for remarks he has denied making or have been misintepreted.

But he has been found out on local television and those numerous pairs of ears belonging to the local and foreign reporters can't all have heard wrongly. The opposition leader will be filing a motion in Parliament today to move for ba RM10 cut of Noh’s salary. In order for Noh not to hide behind his denial, could the Opposition leader obtain copies of the visual TV recording of the press conference or even audio recordings to allow the other MPs to see or hear what Noh really said at the press conference.

The Pak Lah for his own and the gomen's sake should not join Noh in his impossible mission of denial and cover-up and at the least should suspend his deputy from the Internal Security MINIstry for going against his gomen's policy and not telling the truth.
