PLKN Trainee Woes

This year sees the PLKN in its 4th edition but it is obvious that the programme organisers are still living in dreamland and have not got their act together despite its "Satu Hasrat, Satu Semangat, Satu Tekad" sloganeering. There was chaos in the Taiping pickup point, at the Kamunting bas depot, for those going for the 1st series of training this year. Despite of the lessons learnt over the years-past, the organisers were still by default chaotically disorganised. At the last minute, after the trainees had boarded the buses, it was discovered that there were no travel permits for the buses to go to their intended destinasi. Trainees as well as accompanying parents were riled and up in arms under the hot sun. Today happens also to be the 1st day of 2007 and the 2nd day of Aidiladha and presumably parents do have better things to do than to wait for those PLKN chappies to get their act together.

The situation was no better in Kota Bharu, where BERNAMA reported that thousands of accompanying parents had a near showdown with irritant and unsympathetic PLKN secretariat officers after having waited for the buses for more than three hours from 7.30 am. The blame was shifted from the organisers to a bungling bus contractor who probably filled to wake up after new year revelry and failed to show up with his buses. But who has to take responsiblity ultimately? In the end, the departure of the trainees had to be postponed until a new date is announced in the newspapers, radio and television. This would mean another round of the same disorganised oraganised chaos and further deferment of the training period for these trainees, further disruptions to plans.

Meanwhile that DPM, the guy in-charge of the PLKN, claims that the programme has been well received and will see more trainees selected in the years to come. According to this BolehLand DPM, there was encouraging response from the rakyat, particularly parents who wanted their children to participate in the programme. He further claimed ::

"I myself have received several applications from the parents whose children were not selected to be reconsidered for participation. This goes to show that the response to the programme is encouraging."

Can we believe him?
