Anwar d'Chameleon?

:: Words to remember Anwar by ::
{from email interview with Malaysiakini}
Question ::
Several quarters have claimed that you have remained ambiguous with regard to your political future. Some have labelled you a ‘political chameleon’. In particular, how committed will you be to the opposition and are you entertaining any thought of returning to Umno after 2008?

Answer ::
I have tried throughout my life to remain constant to my ideals, to my belief in democracy, in poverty eradication, in developing a more open, tolerant and united society that enriches the lives of all citizens with justice and equity, that retains its spiritual values to guide its moral conscience in doing right and caring for the human dignity of all.

I hope over time I have listened and learnt, and sometimes that means using new ideas. And sometimes to bring the same message to different audiences you have to use different approaches, different language of ideas to make the same message relevant and comprehensible - that is not being a chameleon - that is working to be effective.

I remain loyal to my core principles, I am rededicated to my core principles. I seek to recommit myself to working for them in the most effective way in the circumstances and conditions of today.

I seek to work for a better Malaysia, in a better world through open democracy, in a vibrant society founded on justice and respect for the human dignity and rights of each person that gives everyone the opportunity achieve their full potential and contribute as much as they are able to the common good .

Times change and different times make their own demands but what is meaningful - values and objectives are the anchors - is be constant to my core principles, the moral compass that I set my course by. I only hope to be more effective in the future and to make my consistency of purpose clearer to everyone by the actions and endeavours I undertake.

What Can We Do For Ourselves

::It has been 3 pretty long weeks since Anwar has been out. He has gone for his back operation, which we are told is one big success as he is no longer wheelchair bound. He has had foreign leaders, ex-leaders and even UMNO leaders calling on him. He has been interviewed, reinterviewed and even triple interviewed by all the media which counts. He has been barred from a party, even when he has not applied to join or rejoin it. And presently at this party's general assembly he is being vilified as being treacherous and a traitor but at the same time he appears to be dominating discussions there.

A freed Anwar future role has been on the minds of many. Speculations have been rife as to what his next step or steps will be. Will he head a 'rainbow coalition', will he go international or will he stay local and do all that has been attributed to him. That is, will he live up to all those things he had spoken of or as some may say 'promised', stuff like justice for all, national unity and reconciliation, civilisational dialogue of the local variety, doing away with the oppressive acts presently threatening local civil society and many more. Many have wondered aloud which 'road' will Anwar take? Will he be there to lead 'reformasi' further down the road to its ultimate goal?

We have much to thank the Anwar saga or episode for, for opening up our eyes and not only that with our eyes opened, we are now better to forge ahead and fight for the stuff which have been denied us up till now. It may be better if we have a dedicated leader to lead us in our fight but what is even more important is that we be willing to fight for ourselves and truly want what civil society can and has to give us. Time is of the essence, for already many of the reforms that we are looking for have been hijacked and and the watered-down forms have been said to have been implemented, already some are saying that there is no need for further reforms. These reforms have to be rehijacked and those in power made to understand that half-measures are poor replacements, lets have the genuine and 'asli' reforms.

So in the final analysis it is not What Can Anwar Do For Us but What Can We Do For Ourselves which is of utmost importance. As someone has mentioned Keep fighting - with or without Anwar or even Against Anwar if it need be, for Reformasi, Justice, Unity, Judicial Independence and change for the better are for all Malaysians and we must all be involved and it is for us all to carry on the torch of Reformasi and the fight.

Bad-awi Joins In An-War

::As a follow up to Hishamuddin's call, Pak Lah has today also branded the 'un-named traitor' as 'treacherous'.[makes one wonder why they are so reluctant to name the 'traitor' or 'the treacherous one']. Pak Lah reportedly said ::
"It (the party/UMNO) cannot compromise with those who have disparaged, smeared and attacked the dignity of and been treacherous to the party."

Mahathir has also joined in to say that "it's UMNO's right to reject Anwar." At least he made no bones as to who the 'un-named traitor' and 'treacherous one' refers to.
It is so right what Mahathir had previously say that "Melayu Mudah Lupa". Especially so, where some present and immediate-past UMNO leaders are concerned; they just need to look up the present UMNO membership list to see that among them, there are many who have abandoned UMNO before, joined other parties and been eventually readmitted to UMNO. Probably, during their period in the wilderness or other parties, these ex-members did or said nothing against UMNO and could be safely readmitted! Among those who have left UMNO before and returned to its folds are Mahathir, Rais Yatim, Kuli; to name a few. But not all UMNO 'mudah lupa', Malaysiakini reports :: Anwar issue: That was Hishammuddin's own view and here's another who thinks that Razaleigh, Anwar not traitors to UMNO.
Despite being free, it looks like 'irrelevant Anwar' is still not free of Anwar-Bashing by some UMNO leaders and members.

An-War at the UMNO GA begins

::For someone who has been out of UMNO for more than 6 years, incarcerated for some 6 years and has only just been free for 3 weeks, the attack upon him, which has just begun at the UMNO GA 2004 can be said to be unprecedented. All three Umno movements – Youth, Wanita and Puteri – were unanimous in rejecting any return of “traitors” to the party reported the Star. In the past there were other prominent UMNO members who were asked to leave but were not subjected to such 'orchestrated' attacks and many did eventually return to the fold. But it looks like the 'traitor' being targetted this time will not be able to return.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said:
“The Youth will not allow any traitor to be given a second chance to destroy the party from within. Those who were against Umno, those who burnt Umno flags and those who took part in processions to ridicule Umno leaders, please do not harbour any hope to return to Umno, what more to be within the Umno leadership.”

Is he forgetting that just before the 11th general election, there were those 'traitors' who returned to UMNO from PKR and were prominently photograped with the incoming UMNO President. We know that UMNO has its very own definition for 'meritocracy', we certainly also wonder whether it also has its very own definition for 'traitors' which others are not allowed to determine, whatever that means.
That grand old dame of Wanita UMNO, who was retained as the Wanita chief uncontested, said the Wanita wing would not allow anybody with vested interests to be readmitted to the party and create trouble. Also without mentioning any name but not being too mysterious, she said: “It is known whom I am referring to.” Is that name now 'taboo' and foul tasting on the tip of one's tongue? Even the best tasting of things or even the flavour of the day can go bad in a couple of years, why not someone who was put away for 6 years.
Ex-Puteri Umno head Datuk Azalina Othman Said said the movement must reject traitors who had left Umno and were against the party, according to Bernama. "We must fight leaders who left the party and were against us. Don't ever allow them to return," she said.
Over the next couple of days of the UMNO GA 2004, can we expect more calls regarding how this un-named UMNO 'traitor' should be dealt with? It wasn't long ago, that this un-named 'traitor' who was then languishing in some government-paid for facility was declared frequently to be 'tidak relevan' but presently he can be said to the focus of this year's UMNO GA. When will this guy be truly and finally 'tidak relevan' or has UMNO also has its own definition for this too.

Meritocracy is Meritocracy is Meritocracy

::At the opening of this year's UMNO Wanita, Youth and Puteri delegate meeting, the incoming deputy UMNO President had plenty to say about meritocracy in his 56-page speech. He advised the delegates to choose UMNO leaders based on their merit and understanding of the values in the struggles of UMNO and the Malays. He said ::
"Choose leaders who have proven their integrity. Choose those who have excellent capability to lead."
"What is most important is to choose leaders who truly understand the values of the Umno struggles and that of the race."

Despite all these words of wisdom from the incoming deputy President, the 2500 odd delegates have been given no chance to determine the two most important leaders of UMNO through the democratic process.
The incoming 2nd most important UMNO leader also touched on measures to strengthen the Malay economy, absorption of noble values, mastery of other people's languages, education, the importance of being good followers, adopting or accepting meritocracy as a culture and as a measure their achievements and capability in all fields and building a community based on the concept of Islam Hadhari. All these sound pretty good in his speech.
But the incoming deputy UMNO president seems to have his own version of meritocracy for he is quoted in the NST in the following manner ::
"Meritocracy will enable the Malays to persevere." However, he said, UMNO would not allow others to determine the form of meritocracy that should be implemented in the country.

So it looks like Najib and/or UMNO will have its own version of meritocracy.

Yes Datuks, No Tan Sri and No Politicians??

::In an exclusive report yesterday, the Star said that ::
Two Datuks are among four prominent Johor businessmen believed to be heading a well-organised loan sharking syndicate with operations in the southern and central regions of the peninsula.
Their identities came to light after police here arrested 16 of their “field workers” in the past week.
Police sources said they have ascertained the whereabouts of the Datuks but were gathering more evidence before arresting them.

In a follow up today to that report, the Star says :: Police: More Datuks may be involved in syndicate It also quoted the polis as saying that no politicians are involved. It reported CID director Datuk Musa Hassan as saying,
"Our investigations revealed that only Datuks are supposedly involved in the syndicate. There is no Tan Sri involved. All of them are businessmen and not politicians.
“My officers from Bukit Aman are co-ordinating with other officers in every state to go after those involved in the activities.”

The MalayMail under its headlines :: No Such Thing Thing says Noh, reported that Deputy Internal Security MINIster, Datuk Noh Omar, refuted reports in yesterday's dailies that a Tan Sri and a Datuk were involvedd in loan shark activities. He said neither Bukit Aman polis or their counterparts in Selangor had said that a Tan Sri was involved. In Parliament, in response to a question from a DAP MP, he said that there was no indication that politicians or influential people were involved in 'along' activities. So it appears that among the 'alongs' there are Yes Datuks, No Tan Sri and No Politicians.

Operation Hollywood::The Pentagon Link

::i have often wondered how is it that certain films produced by Hollywood can have such a realistic array of ships, airplanes and tanks to show. Take Top Gun for example, the airplanes did Take My Breath Away. Now the Pentagon-Hollywood link has been revealed in an article in MotherJones.com.

To keep the Pentagon happy storylines are bent and retold, some villians are 'airbrushed' and come out as shining heroes. Events are given the spin so that the US of A comes out top, take Black Hawk Down for eg. There appears to be a quid-pro-quo agreement between the Pentagon and Hollywood. The american military should in most, if not all, instances come out brighter than it really is. Hollywood is known to add successful rescue scenes where there should be none.

Read all about Operation Hollywood by clicking here to learn the truth about those 'Pentagon directed' movies.

Taiping Zoo Cheated

::The Taiping 4, remember those 4 baby gorillas which were bought by Taiping Zoo are in the news again. This time in the Dewan Rakyat. The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry Parliamentary Sec told the Dewan that Taiping Zoo was cheated in the purchase of four African Baby gorillas last year. In his question the Larut MP, Raja Ahmad said the purchase price could have reached RM500,000 each.

Despite the former MINIster in charge, Datuk Seri Law Hieng Ding having said that investigations were being carried out to identify the person or persons involved in the scam, to date no further info regarding the investigations have been forth coming. Datuk Seri Law is also no longer in the Cabinet and with him the culprit(s) involved appear also to have been forgotten.

After it was discovered that the Taiping 4 were actually not bred in captivity, but caught in he wild, conservationists rallied for the babies to be returned to Africa. In April this year, they were finally returned to Africa. But instead of Cameroon, where they came from, they were sent to South Africa's National Zoo in Pretoria, much to the chagrin of the conservationists. Apparently the Parliamentary Sec had claimed in the Dewan that they were returned to Cameroon.

Suhakam & Campus Elections

::i have just read the Malaysiakini and you can go read the article :: Aspersions cast on Suhakam’s ability to monitor student polls by Beh Lih Yi yourself in full if you are a subscriber.
In the said article, the Ministry of Higher Learning parliamentary secretary, one Dr Adham Baba, who is also Umno Youth education bureau chief. and who was a UM [Universiti Malaya] student leader in the mid-80s, said ::
“Is Suhakam professional enough to monitor the polls? Are they well-equipped? Who are they going to send?”

When told about the runaround given to Suhakam by the universities and his MINIstry, Adham said that his MINIistry would leave the decision to the campus authorities. Apparently Suhakam is still waiting for approval to monitor. Suhakam says that monitoring of campus elections is among its tasks. Unfair election is a human rights violation whether it is inside or outside the campus, so Suhakam got to do its job. The Education MINIstry, on the other hand, maintains that the universities have the machinery required to conduct the elections and there is no need for Suhakam.
When told that the ‘pro-establishment’ forces, allegedly being helped by the university authorities, have won over the ‘anti-establishment’ groups in UM, which was formerly a bastion of the anti group, the parliamentary secretary was delighted. He had this to say
“I see this development because students want real changes. When the anti-establishment candidates controlled the student council, UM’s ranking among Asian universities dropped from 11th in 1997 to 27th in 2000. They succeeded in making changes this time.”

What has control of the student council got to do with UM's Asian ranking? He should be looking at his MINIstry instead for the decline in ranking and do some homework. The state of education in this country, whether it is lower education or higher education is in the rut right now, thanks to his MINIsstry. Now with two MINIstries looking after education, the thing is whether his MINIstry and the 'Lower Learning MINIstry' are up to it. Hopefully there are able return UM to its former state in the near future. But then again with a MINIstry which think that student councils should be docile and supportive only of governement policies, that student councils affect a university's ranking and that all is well with guided campus elections, can we truly have hopes.

Another D-Day for Anwar
Federal Court Review Failed, Now for Royal Pardon

::Today is another big D-Day [Decision Day] for Anwar. Will the Federal Court review of its decision to reject Anwar’s appeal against his conviction on corruption charges?
According to Malaysiakini, which is covering the event live, the judges have started reading their decision.
A decision in Anwar's favour will allow him to return to mainstream political life. Otherwise he will have to wait till 2008!.
Anwar has served his jail term for the conviction, the sentence was for 6 years but with the usual one-third remission for good behaviour, he had to serve a total of 4 years. His jail term ended on 14th April 2003.
With Anwar still in Germany, the crowd gathered outside the Palace of Justice [Istana Keadlian] is much smaller than on 2nd September.
BBC correspondent in Kuala Lumpur, Jonathan Kent, reports that Anwar awaits key court decision
The Star does not appear bothered by this other D-Day for Anwar, it instead concentrated on the Copycat Tester, Door closed for Anwar and Khairy and his need to live up to high expectations.

At 1013hrs,
Bursa Malaysia CI up 3.13
Resorts is down 5 sen

At 1818hrs
Malaysiakini reports :: Federal Court rejects Anwar’s corruption appeal. Another D-Day over for Anwar. The Federal Court, presided by Court of Appeal president Abdul Malek Ahmad and Federal Court justices Siti Norma Yaakob and Alauddin Mohd Sherif, ruled unanimously that its previous decision to uphold a High Court ruling that found Anwar guilty was in order.
It looks like win one, lose one [or should it be lose many?]

BBC reports :: Malaysia's Anwar loses court bid. It also says that Anwar's lawyer told Reuters news agency that Mr Anwar would now seek a royal pardon to clear his name completely.

CNN has also reported that Anwar's lawyer says that the next step is for him to seek royal clemency.
"There's not any more legal avenue, except for executive clemency," Anwar's lawyer Karpal Singh told reporters after the ruling.
"That's where the direction should go from here. He would file for pardon and I will ask him to do so," Reuters news service reports Singh saying.

In the same report, Anwar is quoted as saying that he is not in a rush to return to politics.
My interest is not participating in politics right now," Anwar told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Foreign Correspondent program.
"My interest is national unity, peace, and we have to grapple with the complex issue of terrorism and the way Islam is being demonized," he said. (Full story):: Anwar forgives, but won't forget

Earlier before being freed on 2nd September, Anwar had said that he would not be seeking a Royal Pardon. But times have changed and if time is of the essence where his return to political life is concerned, a Royal Pardon may be his next move. Lets wait and see.

Update
It appears that Karpal Singh has got it wrong. According to a report in Malaysiakini, Anwar is not expected to seek a Royal Pardon. Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Youth chief Mohd Ezam Mohd Noor said he sees no reason why Anwar would ask for a pardon. Anwar’s lead counsel Christopher Fernando has also said that Anwar had not given any instructions to seek for a pardon. But then again it would be Anwar who would have the final say. When the final tag came, Lim Guan Eng did seek for a Royal Pardon just before the 11th election. Even without a Royal Pardon, there is life still for one like Anwar in the next four years or so. Lets see what is on his agenda.

Anwar::Tiada UMNO bagi MU

::Looks like the floodgates have opened now that the big boss, Pak Lah, has let it be known that he has no intention of bringing a freed Anwar back to UMNO again. He has also pointed out that Anwar has not been completely cleared of homosexuality. These two issues have been prominently featured in the local as well as the foreign print media. The NST had it on its frontpage yesterday as UMNO won’t re-admit Anwar and again today as UMNO not keen to have Anwar back, two days in succession, the Star was a wee bit slow and only featured it today. When one reads the reports, it is obvious that it is not UMNO but Pak Lah who does not want Anwar back in UMNO. But never fear all that will be corrected soon.
Today, soon after Pak Lah's declaration, the leaders of the BN component parties are jumping on the bandwagon and so are the leaders in UMNO. One can expect in the next days to see letters flooding the comments and mail sections of our mainstream printed media. Letters dealing with Anwar's recent freedom have been conspicuously absent in the past one week or so, making it appear that joe-public cares little for what happened on 2nd September 2004.
Gerakan president Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik claiming himself to be a great smeller, said that "he can smell something even if it is far away" And what is it that he is smelling? Lim KY claims that he could smell "Anwar's 'boys' plotting to split the ruling party [UMNO] and Barisan Nasional."
MCA vice-president Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn said the party respected UMNO's [or really Pak Lah's] decision not to re-admit Anwar as a member. He also said MCA upheld the spirit of partnership in the BN by respecting all decisions of other members in the coalition. Hopefully MCA's decisions get similar respect!
Utusan has the Deputy Information Minister Datuk Zainudin Maidin saying that "only non-realists and those who do not know the history of UMNO leadership will dream that former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be re-accepted by the Malays and UMNO." He also said, "Although there has been cases of sacked UMNO leaders being taken back into the party, they had merely remained on the sidelines or slipped into political oblivion." Obviously he has forgotten about his former boss while being hasty in cuddling up to his new one. The Tun was also expelled from UMNO but just see how far he got after being rehabilitated. Need we remind him that politics is of the possible.
Wanita UMNO head Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz has quickly placed herself and Wanita UMNO at Pak Lah's side. She said Wanita UMNO was firm in its stand as it was committed to the UMNO struggle for the Malays, Malaysians and the country while Anwar had long proven to strive for his own agenda. Once again we find an UMNO leader claiming to be the sole voice of all its members. There will be more joining these leaders in the next few days.

Spontaneous Trait Inference

::Like to share this article with all of you, it was pointed out by Emaung of Artseefartsee and the original is to be found at boogie.com

A recent study* defines "spontaneous trait inference" as, when we talk about someone, that what we say is often transferred to us in the mind of the listener. In other words, people who talk poorly about others are often perceived by the listener to possess the same negative qualities they speak about.

That may sound unfair, but those who make a practice of speaking positively about others will be happy to learn that positive comments are even more likely to cause spontaneous trait inference. If you talk about the positive qualities of people, the listener will subconciously infer you possess those positive traits - unless, of course, your actions betray your words.

As part of their study, the group set up an experiment in which one group saw people talking about themselves and another group saw the same people say the same things about acquaintances. Both the participants who saw "Fred" say "I am shy" and participants who saw Fred say "Ethel is shy" thought Fred was shy.

Spontaneous trait inference only proves what your mother told you was good advice...if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. It's nothing new, but now it's got a fancy new name and some science to back it up.

Earl Nightingale, one of the greatest motivational speakers and writers in history, became the only non-entertainer to sell a million records. His record was titled, The Strangest Secret. The secret, he illustrated, had been well-known throughout history, yet few people seemed to be aware of it.

What was the secret? That we become what we think. Earl had spent twenty years searching for the reasons some people succeed and some people fail when he realized he had read the answer again and again. It was in the New Testament, in the sayings of Buddha, in the writings of Lao Tse, in the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and in hundreds of other writings - we reap what sow, we are the captain of our soul, we become what we think about.

Earl read the same thing in thousands of books until he finally realized, "We can’t become anything but what we think!"

James Allen put it this way, "A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts."

It's clear then, that for us to be thought of well by others, we must speak well of others. Because what we say comes from our thoughts, we must first think well of others before we can speak well of them. Before we can think well of others, we must train ourselves to look for the good in others. And finally, because we most easily recognize in others that which we see in ourselves, we must begin by looking for the good in ourselves, not for vanity's sake, but to utilize our positive traits in positive and useful ways.

Sometimes it's way too easy to get down on ourselves when things don't go as we hope or expect. We can't let the ease of self-deprecation deny us from becoming who we want to become. Self-determination is our birthright, and no one but us can keep us from achievement. We only need to think rightly, for we become who we think we are. Or to put it another way, we think into existance who we become in the end.

So think and speak well of others, and people will think well of you. When you are thinking well of each other, a symbiotic relationship builds that can benefit both, whether the other person realizes the nature of your symbiosis or not, after all, we don't have to understand gravity keep from floating off into space.

*The study cited was published by John Skowronski, associate professor of psychology at Ohio State University, and his colleagues.

UMNO won’t re-admit Anwar

::The NST says :: UMNO won’t re-admit Anwar; it said that "this point was made by incoming UMNO president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to all Barisan Nasional component party leaders at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting."
According to the NST sources, Pak Lah also told the Cabinet that there had been no deal made and that the administration had not interfered with the judiciary at all as far as Anwar's release was concerned.

Let us look at what Bernama has to say, it made the report under this headlines :: No Intention To Bring Anwar Into UMNO. The Bernama report quoted Pak Lah as saying, "I want to clarify that. I don't like this to go on and on and become an issue. That is not good as I have nothing to hide, why should I hide." He added saying he had no intention of bringing Anwar back to UMNO, he is quoted as saying, "Why should I be planning to bring him back immediately upon his release? Anwar has been going against us and he is an opposition member. Why should Pak Lah make this deal? Then this BUT, "But if you are talking about UMNO's decision, then UMNO's decision must be made by UMNO itself."

It is obvious that what Pak Lah, the latest unchallenged UMNO president-elect, said and what NST has reported him as saying are not the same, what Pak Lah really said is :: "I have no plans to bring Anwar back into UMNO. I explained this to them because they [the BN component party leaders] wanted to know." As for what UMNO will say, we will all have to wait.

The STS carries an AP report which quoted the NST report and spun it as :: Umno won't take Anwar back, says Abdullah . The STS further says that
The statement was the strongest indication since Anwar was released that the man who succeeded him as the heir to long-time premier Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad sees no place for his former rival in the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).

It has also pointed out that Pak Lah was cited at length in the newspaper [NST], which it says reflects government thinking, that the 2-1 court decision that overturned Anwar's sodomy conviction due to an unreliable key witness had not cleared Anwar completely of homosexuality. It concluded by saying that Anwar is aware that the homosexual issue could cloud his reputation and further says that Anwar has said he will consult with his lawyers to have references to homosexuality stricken from the verdict.

Reuters UK appears to have got the intention of Pak Lah regarding Anwar and UMNO right. See this report which says the following ::
"I have no intention of bringing him back to UMNO," Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told reporters after joining an aerobics workout on Sunday.
"I did not make any deal with Anwar, no deal involving the party or relating to his release."
Abdullah said UMNO had not taken any decision to bar Anwar from the party.
"I haven't got that kind of formal reaction from the party, but on the basis of what UMNO leaders have been talking, I can make the conclusion that they are not keen to have him back.

But whatever eventually happens to Anwar, what the people see and decide regarding Anwar and his intentions will be the important thing. Whether Pak Lah has no intention or UMNO has no intention or whatever Anwar's intentions are, are not so important. Anwar has said so many things during his 6 years in the wilderness and during the brief period after obtaining his freedom. People keep your eyes and ears opened and we won't be blinded and fooled. People, let us be vigilant.

The Jelapang Death Toll (Plaza)

::This is the latest news on the relocation of the Jelapang Toll Plaza ::
Construction of new Jelapang Toll Plaza begins next January... In IPOH, construction of a new toll plaza to replace the Jelapang Toll Plaza will start next January as soon as its design has been prepared by the Works Ministry.

Its deputy minister, Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed, said Saturday the design work was expected to be completed by December.

Construction of the toll plaza was expected to take 30 months, he told reporters after attending a briefng by the Perak Public Works Department here.

Mohd Zin said the new toll plaza will be built based on the ministry's original proposal to eliminate the Jelapang Toll and the Ipoh Selatan Toll and provide a free alternative route for Ipoh residents.

He also said work to upgrade roads identified as dangerous throughout the country were still being implemented.

In Perak, some RM4 million have been spent to repair dangerous roads, including in Hilir Perak, Kerian, Kuala Kangsar, Larut Matang and Selama.

It looks like the Plus N-S highway users will have to wait at least 3 years before the relocation will occur. In the meanwhile, will the Works Ministry take some positive steps to ensure that the "killer stretch" will not continue to take its death toll on the highway users? Why is the Works Ministry not interested in implementing the shifting of the toll plaza to the Sungai Perak layoff, even if it temporarily while waiting for the elevated interchanges to be constructed. This will at the least reduce accidents at the present site. Will the DAP, PAS, PKR or any NGOs take up the cause, before another death occur? Is it more important to ensure that oft quoted need to provide a free alternative route for Ipoh residents more important?

Death Bells Toll Once again @ Jelapang Toll

::i do not have the exact statistics regarding the total death toll due to accidents at the Jelapang toll plaza, but it must be high for the alarm bells have been busily ringing. This year alone there have been 5 deaths. There has been much talk about shifting the toll plaza but while Samy and his chappies from the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) and Plus Expressways Sdn Bhd, are having their talk talk sessions and deciding on which plan to put into action, the death bells have kept on tolling away. The latest accident occurred early this morning and a lorry attendant was killed when the southbound vehicle he was in hit the back of a trailer-lorry at km 265.8 of North-South Highway, near the deadly Jelapang toll plaza. This is the 4th serious accident at the said toll plaza this year.
The 3rd accident this year occurred on the night of 7th Sept, fortunately there was no serious injuries. Again it involved a southbound trailer-lorry was going down a slope as it was approaching the death toll plaza when it suddenly went out of control.
At the beginning of this year, on 5th Jan, three people were killed after another trailer-lorry crashed into another trailer-lorry. Superstitous people might be blaming the latest two accidents on the 'Ghost Month' but what can one say about the earlier two?
Samy and his chappies should be putting their plans into action instead of just talk talk. It seems there are grand plans to have the death toll plaza shifted and at the same time construct several elevated interchanges, which would allow motorists to enjoy the free ride within Ipoh town and the surrounding areas. This RM 250 million grand plan would probably take at the least a couple of years to complete, in the meantime the death bells are tolling. It is difficult to understand why Samy and his chappies are not willing to consider the cheaper, said to be RM4 million, plan where the Jelapang toll plaza is shifted northwards. The proposal by the north Perak haulers was to site the toll plaza at or near the Perak River lay-off.
So in the meanwhile while they are having their talk talk, southbound travellers on the Plus North-South highway should take precautions when approaching the death toll plaza, ensure that there are no heavy vehicles behind you when coming down that deadly slope.

Amazing Happenings in an Amazing Week

::The amazing week started on 02.09.2004 with the amazing freeing of DSAI from the Sungai Buloh prison after he had his appeal against his sodomy conviction and sentence allowed by the Federal Court. If one reads the judgement, at the end of it, one would say it is amazing, for part of the judgement reads "....we find evidence to confirm that the appellants were involved in homosexual activities and we are more inclined to believe that the alleged incident at Tivoli Villa did happen' but the 2 appellants are set free as the charges against them have not been proven.
So soon after they were freed, the media amazingly went to town, treating DSAI in particular like he is a newly rediscovered celebrity and splashed large pics of him all over the front pages and even in some of the inner pages. For the past 6 years, the media must have been amazingly starving themselves. Even the TV stations got into the amazing act.
The Imegresen or is it Immigrasi did not want to be left out, it also had to perform one amazing feat and showed that it was possible to get an international passport in one amazing hour at that. Can normal joe-public hope for a passport to be issued in double that amazing time?
So off DSAI went onto Munich, not as earlier speculated on a Saudi chartered jet but on a good-old MAS flight. Within a few short amazing hours, he had his operation done by one Dr Thomas Hoogland in his AlphaKlinik at about 9pm Malaysian Time on 06.09.2004. The STS in its report, had this to say ::
On Monday night, while still groggy from the operation that had ended just three hours earlier, he [DSAI] took unsteady steps back to his room with the support of friends. He was practically mobbed by family and friends who had set up a vigil at the hospital.
Smiling broadly, he said then: 'I am okay. I am a bit dizzy, and there is the operation pain. But not the back pain. It feels great. I consider this a miracle.'

Meanwhile, the BBC in its report said that "The newly released former deputy of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, has made an "amazing" recovery from back surgery, according to his doctor in Germany. ...", a similar report can be seen in the Kansas City Star
In the postop pics we are able to see that Anwar's recovery is certainly amazing for the pics show him sitting up in his hospital bed minus the 'ubiquitous cervical collar'. Can we presume that his operation was confined to the lumbar spine? Did the karate-chop damaged cervical spine also had an amazing recovery?
In this amazing week, we were also told by the AG that according to the constituition the Federal Court cannot review its own decision. Amazingly, the court unanimously ruled that it can do so. Subsquently, the court stated that it would deliver its decision on Anwar's corruption conviction on 15th September 2004, do we have another amazing week in store.
This amazing week has also brought into the limelight what one CPO expects of his polis force :: the Perak CPO has this to say about what he expects of his fellow polis :: "They should be as clean as an angel, or almost at least as spotless as one." Imagine an amazingly almost angelic polis force!
This amazing week, i have been keenly following the letter and comment pages of the Star and the NST, believe me there is not more than one letter writer writing in to say his piece regarding DSAI amazing release from custody. Amazing self-censorship? But Malaysiakini certainly has its good share of the bouquets and the brickbats, amazingly these letters can be viewed for free, here; there is no better place/site to go for balanced comments. Till the next amazing week, relax and enjoy the Bajet on Friday.

Successful Op for Anwar

::According to a Malaysiakini report at 1225hrs, DSAI has had a successful operation in AlphaKlinik Munich last night, Malaysian time. Following his successful operation, he was able to walk back to his hospital room. His "straight leg raising" test has also improved from 10 degrees to 80 degrees! And that's one fantastic improvement.
Anwar would probably need weeks of physiotherapy, if not months, before he can achieve recovery of power in his lower limbs. Anyway here's wishing him a speedy recovery and as mentioned before if i were him, i would then proceed to enjoy the family and the family life missed during those 6 long years.
Another good news for Anwar is that the Federal Court today ruled that it has the jurisdiction to hear a review application by Anwar to review the court’s own decision in dismissing his corruption appeal. The AG had raised objection yesterday when the case opened. And if he should also get over this hurdle, he would truly be free as far as his political career be concerned. Bernama appears to be behind time as in this report stamped September 07, 2004 13:16 PM, ended saying :: "Anwar is now in Munich, Germany, to undergo spine surgery"
At 1542hrs, the Bursa CI is up 6.33 but Resorts is down 15 sen

Clean As an Angel

:: There is this news item of a senior Perak Polis Officer, a deputy OCPD at that, being nabbed for alleged khalwat in an apartment in Jelutong Penang.
The whole incident was remarkable for a few things, the said senior polis officer, said to be in his 50s, was able to leap onto the neighbouring balcony, he had to be quite fit and athletic indeed. Another remarkable thing was that his leap of fate and the associated commotion was not noticed by the said neighbour.
The raiding party, after knocking on the door of the apartment where the alleged khalwat was suspected to be ongoinng, waited for 30 minutes before kicking open the door. Why the inordinate prolonged period of waiting :: sufficient time for covering up and the leap of fate. But as it was, the leaper was caught in the end.

The Perak CPO ie Chief Police Officer, when commenting on the said leaper, apart from saying that if proven true, the action of his deputy OCPD would definitely tarnished the image of the Perak polis force, he had this to say :: “They should be as clean as an angel or almost as spotless as one.” Imagine lily-white and almost spotless angelic polis!

All the Anwar News

::Anwar was freed by the Federal Court after winning a 2:1 majority decision to overturn his sodomy conviction. Within a short period of time Anwar was a local media celebrity, within a couple of days, there were more news items on Anwar than there were during the 6 years he was detained, barring all those juicy, irrelevant items which were reported with relish by the local news media during his trials. What a change, big big photos of him and Wan Azizah were carried in all the local papers and television stations where previously one would have have to be most observant in order to get a glimpse of them.
Within hours, there were all sorts of speculations. Was there a deal, would Anwar be rejoining UMNO, was Anwar as unhealthy as claimed by his family members and lawyers, would Anwar continue reformasi and resurrect his political career, why the Saudi involvement, would Pak Lah be congratulating him on his release and some were ready to divine Anwar's future and so on and so forth. Of course there were the rumours that his supporters would be celebrating his freedom big time with demonstrations. There were the usual warnings to respect the law by none other than Najib and even Pak Lah. But calm prevails said Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Deputy Director Datuk Arthur Edmonds on Friday after Anwar's release.
After having been away from family and friends for some 6 years, it was obvious that Anwar would have to be keep on his toes or rather up in his wheelchair by endless streams of friends, wellwishers and supporters. Some came streaming through the front door while one notable was said to have been ushered through the kitchen door. The crowds would tend to indicate that "irrelevant Anwar" was not really "irrelevant". Those, who for reasons better known to themselves, feared being seen at Anwar's side physically made good use of their phones. But some notables were said to have been turned away at the door.
Many print news media chieftains hailed the act of the judiciary in freeing Anwar as the closure to one of the most trying times in Malaysian political history and as a time for national reconciliation. Will it be so, should it be so? Many people would like to see this happen but there is this one person who might not as he reportedly said :: "I still believe Anwar is guilty". Whatever, the majority seems to be happy with the judicial decision.
And what of this judicial decision, as Justice Abdul Hamid has said "read the judgement in full before commenting" (or something to that effect). It will have to be pointed out that the judgement does say in summary (this is something freed Anwar and also Sukma will have to live?) ::
To summarise our judgment, even though reading the appeal record, we find evidence to confirm that the appellants were involved in homosexual activities and we are more inclined to believe that the alleged incident at Tivoli Villa did happen, sometime, this court, as a court of law, may only convict the appellants if the prosecution has successfully proved the alleged offences as stated in the charges, beyond reasonable doubt, on admissible evidence and in accordance with established principles of law. We may be convinced in our minds of the guilt or innocence of the appellants but our decision must only be based on the evidence adduced and nothing else. In this case Azizan's evidence on the "date" of the incident is doubtful as he had given three different "dates" in three different years, the first two covering a period of one month each and the last covering a period of three months. He being the only source for the "date", his inconsistency, contradiction and demeanor when giving evidence on the issue does not make him a reliable source, as such, an essential part of the offence has not been proved by the prosecution. We also find the second appellant's confession not admissible as it appears not to have been made voluntarily. Even if admissible the confession would not support the "date" of the commission of the offences charged. We have also found Azizan to be an accomplice. Therefore corroborative evidence of a convincing, cogent and irresistable character is required. While the testimonies of Dr. Mohd. Fadzil and Tun Haniff and the conduct of the first appellant confirm the appellants' involvement in homosexual activities, such evidence does not corroborate Azizan's story that he was sodomised by both the appellants at the place, time and date specified in the charge. In the absence of any corroborative evidence it is unsafe to convict the appellants on the evidence of an accomplice alone unless his evidence is unusually convincing or for some reason is of special weight which we find it is not. Furthermore, the offence being a sexual offence, in the circumstances that we have mentioned, it is also unsafe to convict on the evidence of Azizan alone.

For all the above reasons, we are not prepared to uphold the conviction. Since the applicbale law in this case requires that the prosecution must prove its case beyond reasonable doubt before the defence may be called, the burden being the same as is required to convict the appellants at the end of the case for the defence, we are of the view that the High Court has misdirected itself in calling for the appellants to enter their defence. They should have been acquitted at the end of the case for the prosecution.

This has been pointed out by none other than the NST chieftain, one Kalimullah Hassan, in his Sunday Column today. The point he wants to make is pretty clear but why he has accompanied his column with a photo showing Anwar (without his cervical collar) and Wan Azizah is not so clear. All recent photos of Anwar after his release have shown him wearing his cervical collar. Is this a recent or file photo of Anwar? What's the message?
A staunch Anwar supporter, RPK of Freeanwar.com and now Malaysia-Today.net fame has this explanation for 'Anwar guilty' portion of the judgement. Those who believe in 'conspiracy theories and 'concocted deals' should read it.
Anwar has taken the right first step after his release, having spent valuable and presumably quality time with his family members, who must have missed him plenty, he has gone on to Munich to seek treatment. Most would wish him a safe operation and a speedy recovery.
After that what next for Anwar? If i were Anwar, i would just sit back and enjoy my family and make up for those missing 6 years and let Malaysia take care of herself. During the past 6 years, if i were Anwar, i would have spent enough time reflecting on Malaysia and on what Malaysians really want and would have realised that Malaysia and Malaysians can take care of themselves and what they presently have is what most Malaysians want, so be it. But then again senile-old me is a nobody but a dreamer and more importantly i am not Anwar Ibrahim.

Blessed Are the Children

::What is this world coming to? This was what flashed through my mind as i followed the BBC account on TV regarding the bloody resolution of the Russian School Siege. From the footage shown it was obvious that something had gone terribly wrong. Everything was haphazard and not coordinated. Civilians were seen involved and the authorities did not appear to be in control. Even the number of hostages were not known, figures ranged from 300 to 1500! Children without shirts and clothes were seen being carried to cars and other vehicles. No ambulances or paramedics were to be seen initially. Explosions and gunfires were o be heard in tthe background. One can follow the BBC's As it happened: Russian school siege account here. The latest reports a death toll of 200! A chronology of events associated with the Russian School Siege can be followed here.

There are news reports saying that the siege was Al Qaeda financed. Official accounts say that the hostage-taking militants wanted an independent Chechen. What a bloody and cowardly way to try to achieve that, targetting innocent school children and parents. It looks like terror knows no form and the limits are being breached every so often. Once again the impotence of the United Nations is revealed. The demand by its Security Council for the immediate release of the hostages apparently went unheard. How is the world going to deal with this amorphous form of terror in which anyone and any place can be the target!

DSAI Free2Go

::Finally after a prolonged midnight of some 6 years, the nation’s highest court at Istana Keadilan has set former DPM Anwar Ibrahim free after quashing his sodomy conviction in a 2:1 decision. Also freed with DSAI is his adopted brother, Sukma Darmawan Sasmitaat Madja who had been convicted of the same offence. For a more detiled account of the judgement, click here.

DSAI is now free to pursue the treatment of his choice for his medical conditions. He is free to go to Munich for further treatment. This must have brought great relief to DSAI, his family members, supporters, reformasi supporters, all those who believe in DSAI not being guilty and even many others.

Lone joins all DSAI wellwishers in wishing him a safe treatment and speedy recovery from his medical conditions.

Puteri Gunung Ledang::Nationwide Screening?

::The film which has been billed as Malaysia's biggest and most expensive, Puteri Gunung Ledang[PGL], hits the cinemas nationwide today. Bernama reports that the film has recorded a sell out in all 39 cinemas nationwide. The expected box-office stampede has started but not for all, see below to understand why.
The film has a website here, this site provides info regarding the film and has downloads too. But it is not fully functional and parts of it is under construction.
This RM15 to RM20 million drama film is based on a local legend and it carries with it, hopes that it will hit the box-office big time and will be screened overseas and gain Malaysia international recognition and acclaim. It will be the first Malaysian entry in a major film festival and the only Southeast Asian movie to make it to the prestigious Venice Film Festival this year, [does this calls for an entry in that Malaysia Book of Records?] PGL is the maiden production by entertainment company Enfiniti. Enfiniti's executive director Shazally Ramli hopes that PGL would spark a 'reel revolution' in Malaysia's near moribund film industry. The total box office takings of all 10 Malay movies screened in 2002 amounted to about RM18.5mil and it is estimated that there are only 500K regular cinema-goers in Malaysia. So for PGL to make it big time, BolehLand is just too too small, PGL has definitely got to go international.
GoPBI.com reports that expectations soar high for this film and describes it as telling a story that's beloved by many Malaysians about a princess, PGL, who is betrothed to the 'cruel ruler of a maritime empire' but loves one of his bodyguards, Hang Tuah, instead.
Directhere.com, a location-based on-line business directory, talked to the director and producers of Puteri Gunung Ledang to discover how does one go about making a movie that has become the costliest ever in Malaysian film-making history. The report has the executive producer Datuk Shazally Ramli saying ::
"We didn’t want to make a movie just for the locals. That is shiok sendiri (pleasing oneself). You will not go anywhere with it commercially. We need more eyeballs and Malaysia, with only 500,000 cinema-goers, would not be sufficient. We want to screen the movie world-wide."

Co-producer and female lead star, Tiara Jacquelina added ::
"It will pave the way for Malaysia to be on the world map of filmmaking."

As for the director, Saw Teong Hin, he has this to say ::
"RM15mil sounds like a lot of money. But given the film we were trying to make, it is not. Everybody just looked at the figure and said ‘Oh, so much money.’ But we had to achieve a lot with that RM15mil. Look at Troy - it costs about US$200mil (RM760mil) to make."

Well, the people of Taiping and the district of Larut, Matang & Selama(LMS) [population more than 250K] certainly wishes the film well and hope that it will receive all the recognition, both local and international, which it deserves. As there are no cinemas in the vicinity, the last to close was burnt down some 7 to 8 years ago, the people will have to wait for our local DVD/VCD producers to start producing this local blockbuster before they can get to see this biggest and most expensive of locally produced films. The nearest cinema happens to be just some 70 to 80 kilometers away in nearby Ipoh or Pulau Pinang. Most likely PGL will make its Taiping & LMS debut [courtesy of our local DVD/VCD BolehLand entrepreneurs] after it has been screened for international audience on 5th September.
